Imagine what riding the Donkey Ears in Witten, Germany looks like! It all starts with exploring Witten House Castle, stopping for lunch at Antalya Kebap Haus, sipping coffee at Backhaus while engaging in a rich conversation about cycling. This is what happened when I had an amazing Witten Bicycle Tour that that was led by Andreas Müller. This was a unique and rich blend of adventure, cycling, culture and community.

My recent Witten Bicycle Tour with Andreas Müller was a truly exceptional experience. It was a blend of scenic beauty, historical insights and rich engaging conversation. Don’t let Andreas Müller’s boyish charm fool you. He is a power house where cycling route designing and planning is concerned.

Apart from being a dedicated Bicycle Mayor, Andreas is also a member of the German National Cyclists’ Association. Together with his beautiful wife, Juta, they live in Witten. What I like the most about Andreas is his genuine passion and love for cycling. His lived-experience as a cyclist and knowledge made this tour an enriching one. By the time we came back to Witten, my heart was filled with awe, gratitude and admiration.

Andreas Müller is a very knowledgeable Bicycle Mayor and Bicycle Tour Guide

The ‘Riding the Donkey Ears’ route is a pure blend of adventure, cycling, culture and community. Of course, coffee, cake and meaningful conversation is part of the delightful menu. Each pedal along the way reveals Witten’s most charming landscapes and iconic landmarks. Our engaging conversations about cycling infrastructure and the rich history of cycling set the stage for a ride that was mentally stimulating and physically enjoyable.

Our journey included delightful stops that added to the overall experience. Our first stop was at Witten’s House Castle, a magnificent and historical landmark. The tour added a touch of magic and grandeur to our journey.

Andreas shared fascinating stories about the castle and its significance, bringing the past to life. Currently, it is being used for teaching the art of playing music instruments. But in the past, Andreas said, it was used in steel manufacturing. As if on cue, trains whistled by, the true tracks bearing witness to Witten’s rich history.

Our next stop was at Witten’s City Park, a stone throw away from Witten Castle House. Once again, Andreas’s deep knowledge of Witten’s history and urban planning truly shone. As we rode through the city park, a green oasis in the heart of the city, I marveled at the well planned tracks and benches. Of course for me this was a perfect way to catch my breath.

Lunch and Coffee Break

Riding the Donkey Ears provides a pefect opportuntiy to enjoy cycling, coffee and cakes that Witten has to offer

After the refreshing break at the city park, we set off to the city centre where we stopped at Antalya Kebap Haus. This was my first ever Turkish dish and it was tantalizing to same the least. After lots of twists and turns, in and out of Dortmund and back into Witten, we took a coffee break. That coffee break at Backhaus provided the perfect opportunity to refuel and reconnect.

As a Bicycle Mayor, Andreas is passionate about sustainable transportation and bike-friendly infrastructure. His insights into the challenges and opportunities that cyclists face are both informative and inspiring. Personally, I consider him a guru. He’s not just a bicycle tour guide. He is a visionary individual who is making Witten a better place for cyclists. If cycling infrastructure has a wall fame, then Andreas Müller deserves a spot. He also deserves a statue in his honor due to his passion, dedication and love for cycling.
